DATA PRESENTATION, ANALYSIS AND INTERPRETATION OF FINDINGS

4.0 Introduction

The study was set to examine the challenges and opportunities of teaching / learning home economics in selected secondary schools in mityana district a case of selected schools in mityana district. In this chapter, results were presented, analyzed and interpreted according to the study objectives using methods explained in chapter three/methodology(above). It contains the findings according to objectives of the study.

4.1 Findings on the Demographic characteristics of the respondents

This section presents the demographic characteristics of the respondents.

In analysis of the findings f the study, it has been revealed that the response number of students were 36% male and 32% female. This finding further revealed that majority of the students studying home economics are female, while on analyzing the Gender of the teachers’ it has been revealed that 53.8% are female while 46.2% were female this finding further revealed that majority of the teachers are female. This finding further revealed that home economics can be viewed in a gender specific way.

The age categories of the students indicate majority were in the age categories of 16 and 17, this finding further shows that the students were mature enough to be in position to answer the question that have been asked to them. On finding out the age category of teachers it was revealed that majority of the teachers were in the age category of 24 at 30.8% and 25 at 23.1%. this results further indicates that , the teachers were still youthful and therefore can give information that is uptodate.

According to the findings of the study, Majority 69.2% of the Teachers were Degree holders, while only 7.7% were master’s degree holders, this study results also further shows that teachers are knowledgeable enough to answer the questions asked well.

According to the findings in the study, the results indicated that majority of the teachers were teaching, S. 1,2,5,6 and their percentage was 76.9 while the rest of teachers S.3,4,6.

According to the findings of the study it has been revealed that the most suitable teaching method was Dictation as indicated by 30.8% of the response, other teaching methods had responses of 15.4% while role play teaching method only had a response of 7.7%.

According to the findings in the study majority 53.8% of the teachers’ asserted that the challenge they are facing in teaching home economics is mainly due to Inadequate facilities, while 23.1% of the teachers asserted that Limited support from administration is one of the challenges facing teaching Home economics.

According to the findings in the study majority 53.8% of the teachers stated that they are aware of opportunities in Home economics while only 46.2% were not aware of any opportunities in Home economics.

According to the findings in the study majority of the students 26% indicated that after One has studied Home economics they can get employed as a Chef, 24% of the students indicated that when one studies Home economics he becomes a nutritionist and 20% indicated that one becomes self-employed.

On findings out the Teachers’ response on opportunities in Home economics, majority 46% of the respondents indicated that Ability to be self-employed is one of the main opportunities in studying Home economics, while 31% of the teachers who stated that the students can get nutritional related jobs if they studied Home economics and while only 23% of the respondents started that Students can work in medical courses.

According to the findings in the study majority of the students indicated that Home economics studies can be improved at 84% ,  while only 16% of the respondents indicated Home economics cannot be improved.

According to the findings of the study majority 24% of the students believed that more teachers teaching Home economics are needed, 18% of the students also believed that classrooms for Home economics class rooms need to be built to encourage the students in pursuing the course, while also other students shared the view that equipping laboratory for Home economics is essential in enhancing the studying of Home economics.

Findings on the limitations of teaching Home economics the 23% of teachers’ response was that one of the main limitations was few teachers, while 61.5% of the respondent did not respondent. The study further indicated that 7.7% of the respondents stated that limited number of teaching text books was one of the main limitations of teaching Home economics.
