DAKA GENERAL FARM
INTRODUCTION
The name of the farm is “Daka General Farm”, the farm will be located in Butaleja district Buyigi village. The main reason for setting up the farm is to close the gap of the current milk shortage and also provide employment to the people of Buyigi village-Butaleja district.
Currently the women of Butaleja district, Buyigi village are seeking for presidential support to be able to improve their farm by specifically buying Friesian cows. To enable daka general farm be successful the farm is seeking for presidential support of five hundred million shillings (500,000,000) to set up a modern farm in Butaleja district.
The farm which has been started as an initiative to enable the women of Butaleja district fight against poverty, hopes to secure funds to procure 50 Friesian cattle, set up hatchery for poultry, and procure the necessary farm equipment. This will enable the women of Butaleja district to stop working for the “stocmach” only and also work for money.
This is mainly due to the fact that the local cows in Butaleja currently produce on average 1-1.5 liters of milk. This poor breeds of cows has increased on the level of poverty and food insecurity in Butaleja.
Currently Butaleja district which is one of the districts that make up Bukedi sub region is the second poorest region in Uganda after Karamoja region and this therefore has propelled Mrs. Daka jane to start a farm that can help in providing training, employment and food security to the women of Butaleja district.
Daka general farm will have a mix of dairy farming, Poultry and mixed farming to help address food shortage in the area.
Daka general farm also hope to train farmers how to use small land area and achieve high yields of crops. This is primarily because majority of people in Butaleja district have on average 2 acres of land and therefore the only way to overcome poverty is by engaging in modern farming methods like daily farming and also planting high yielding crops.
Location of Daka General Farm
Butaleja district which is located in Bukedi sub region is the second poorest region in the country and therefore it is imperative to set up this farm in Butaleja as one of the strategies of alleviating poverty in this area.
Different products and services of the farm
Daka general farm will specifically deal in;
- Dairy products
- Poultry (chicken hatcheries)
- Mixed farming (cotton growing, maize, Beans).
- Training of different farmers in the district on the best farming
Objectives of Daka general farm
- Produce and sell dairy products.
- Produce food to fight poverty in the area.
- Training other farmers in a rotational basis in Butaleja district to fight poverty
- To be a model farm of commercial farming in the area and reduce on peasantry farming methods.
- To provide employment opportunities to the local population in farm.
VISION
Daka general farm will offer training to farmers in Butaleja on modern farming methods to fight against peasant farming which has kept the people in area poor.
MISSION
To supply milk, milk products and food crops to Butaleja district and other surrounding districts.
Dairy products
Daka general farm is seeking funds to Procure 50 Friesian cows which will produce more than 20 liters of milk each on a daily basis.

Daka general farm is expected to generate around 30,000,000 shillings from selling milk only in one month this will enable the women of Butaleja district Buyigi village to live better life, pay school fees for their children and acquire other basic needs of life rather simply relying on their husbands.
Therefore annually if the funds are donated Daka general farm will make 360,000,000 Ugandan shillings per month.
Future prospects
Daka general farm expects to process other milk products like cow ghee and yoghurt.
This milk products are expected to increase the income for Daka general farm and also employ other people.
Key strength of Daka general farm
- Daka general farm has enough land to enhance its expansion.
- Daka general farm is located in an area which is not a cattle corridor therefore this will give the farm additional responsibilities like training other farmers to emulate sustainable commercial farming practice which will increase their income and enable them fight against poverty.
- The demand for milk is high in this area due to increasing levels of urbanization both in Butaleja and the neighboring districts.
KEY MARKET AREAS FOR THE MILK AND MILK PRODUCTS FOR DAKA GENERAL FARM
Butaleja being bordered and near Iganga, Namutuba, Tororo, Mbale , budaka. These areas are slightly urban and are not cattle keeping areas therefore Daka genral farm will have a very big market from different institutions like;
Schools; this area has many schools, universities and institutions. This will provide a big market because currently there is no well-established farm in this area since traditionally the communities who live in this are mainly food gatherers. They grow specific food crops like Rice in butaleja, cassava in Tororo and matooke in bugisu.
This opportunity will be exploited by Daka general farm and will enable the organization to sell its products and also teach other farmers on this type of Business and increase specifically women participation in dairy farming.
Factories; the factories which provide food to their employees will also purchase milk products from Daka general farm. Places like Mbale city have industrial park with several employees and this will provide to milk products like yoghurt.
Tororo district also has several industries for example Tororo town has 5 cement factories with many employees this will therefore provide enough market to Daka general farm since Tororo municipality is just 20 kilometers from Butaleja district.
Retail shops; with high population of people in Butaleja district and surrounding areas, this therefore provides enough expected market for the business to thrive.
Wholesalers; with the current improved road network established by the NRM government the wholesalers will be able to purchase milk and milk products from the farm to other distant place to provide enough market for the farm.
Domestic home consumption; This category of clients are mainly the people around butaleja district like Busolwe , Butaleja, Budumba, Namutumba who will buy the milk products on daily basis for their domestic consumption .
It can therefore be indicated that daka general farm is expected to have enough market and therefore in future it may need to enlarge its farm so as it is able to serve the big market that it will have.

CHICKEN HATCHERY
The chicken hatchery will be set up so as the farm can supply to the local farmers layers that can help to boost the incomes of the local population.
Currently the poverty in Butaleja district is due to the fact that farmers are rearing local breads of chicken which do not lay enough eggs that can facilitate commercial transaction.

To supply the district farmers with better layers that can lay eggs faster so as to enable the farmers get involved in to commercial poultry business.
The local chicks are unable to lift farmers out of poverty due their unproductive nature.
Chicken hatchery will enable Daka general farm to train other farmers so as they are knowledgeable on the modern poultry farming methods.

MIXED FARMING
Daka general farm will also engage in planting of both cash crops and food crops.
Some of the food crops that will be grown in the area include;
- Maize
- Beans
The planting of the food crops will enable Daka general farm achieve two objectives;
- The food output will increase
- The local framers will also learn how to grow food crops in a commercial scale.
Cash crop
The only cash crop that will be planted will be cotton. This will be planted to support the local ginnery to help in the creation of jobs.
Note
Daka general farm will ensure that it uses seeds from registered suppliers to increase the quality and quantity of the seedlings of the food crops.

The farm expects to generate around 33,000,000 shillings per season from selling the crops of beans, maize and cotton this will generally improve the livelihood of the farmers who has been making far less than that.
