ABSTRACT (Rephrased)
This research proposal presents a study aimed at examining the complex role of social media platforms in enabling the smuggling and human trafficking of Somali migrants. Although migration from Somalia—largely driven by conflict, climate change, and economic hardship—is widely recognized, the digital evolution of illegal migration facilitation remains an emerging and critical area of study. The research adopts a mixed-methods approach, incorporating digital ethnography, semi-structured interviews with key stakeholders, and case study analysis to explore the online ecosystem of smuggling and trafficking activities. It seeks to identify the specific platforms, digital tools, and communication strategies used by traffickers to recruit, coordinate, and exploit vulnerable individuals. Additionally, the study evaluates the difficulties faced by law enforcement agencies and platform moderators in addressing these crimes, particularly due to linguistic challenges and the use of encrypted technologies. Ultimately, the study aims to provide practical, evidence-based recommendations for governments, international organizations, and technology companies to disrupt these networks and strengthen the protection of potential victims.
