THE IMPACT OF EMPLOYEE MOTIVATION ON ORGANIZATIONAL PRODUCTIVITY
A Case Study of Century Bottling Company

CHAPTER ONE: INTRODUCTION

1.0 Introduction

This chapter outlines the background of the study, the problem statement, the purpose of the study, research objectives, research questions, as well as the scope and significance of the study.

1.1 Background to the Study

Employee motivation plays a critical role in enhancing productivity within organizations. When employees are well motivated, they tend to take greater satisfaction in their daily tasks, which positively influences their performance. Research indicates that motivated employees are more committed and likely to deliver their best at the workplace. Despite this, many employers and managers often overlook the importance of motivation and instead focus on other factors such as skills, efficiency, technology, and innovation when attempting to improve productivity. However, involving employees in organizational planning and decision-making can increase their motivation and encourage higher performance levels (Kreisman, 2002).

Over time, organizations have recognized motivation as a key strategy for improving employee performance and overall productivity. In today’s competitive global economy, organizations must ensure that their workforce performs effectively to remain competitive. Employee performance is essential not only for organizational success but also for individual growth and development (Meyer & Peng, 2006).

Effective performance management systems are important tools for motivating employees. However, their success largely depends on how seriously they are implemented and utilized by both managers and employees (Pulakos, 2009). Organizations must identify high-performing employees, those requiring additional training, and those who contribute less to organizational efficiency. Performance can be evaluated through various human resource practices such as promotions, job rotation, and job enrichment (Aidis, 2005; Meyer & Peng, 2006).

Employee motivation remains a major concern for organizations worldwide (Lysons, 2006), which informed the choice to conduct this study at Century Bottling Company.

In a highly competitive global market, organizations must effectively manage all factors of production, especially human resources. Unlike machines and materials, managing employees requires careful attention to their emotions, attitudes, and needs. Sustained high performance is often a long-term result of effective employee motivation (Cokins, 2009). Since the 1970s, numerous studies have explored employee motivation, highlighting its significance in improving worker performance. Increasing concern over low productivity, often linked to inadequate remuneration, has made employee performance a key issue for organizations.

1.2 Statement of the Problem

According to the Auditor General’s Report (2015), employees in many local governments in Uganda have exhibited low productivity and often fail to meet their targets. This has become a major concern for the government. Additionally, Onyango-Obbo (2007) reported that local governments are frequently associated with corruption, including embezzlement, misappropriation of funds, and falsification of transactions among both senior and junior staff. As a result, many organizations struggle to achieve their goals, prompting management to question employee productivity.

Parasuraman (2010) suggests that improving employee productivity requires significant investment in modern technologies, training, and incentive systems to enhance motivation. It is against this background that this study seeks to examine the impact of employee motivation on organizational productivity.
