This chapter presents the background of the study, the statement of the problem, purpose of the study, objectives of the study, research questions and the significance of the study.
1.1 BACKGROUND
1.1.1 GENERAL BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY
Drawing has been beneficial to people across the globe for generations fine artists have used drawings to diagnose some people with some illnesses like, adult who remain un able to communicate through verbal expressions when this occurs a non-linguistic approach such as drawing may become an alternative.(Hecaen, 1998).Globally Drawing has been practiced for generations and of recent , it has been heavily commercialized most of the drawings in world major cities like , London, new york, Paris and berlin among many others have sold at record prices . Sometimes hundreds of thousands of dollars or millions (lyon 2007). Drawing is a form of visual art that makes use of any number of drawing instruments to mark a two-dimensional medium. Instruments used include graphite pencils, pen and ink, inked brushes, wax color pencils, crayons, charcoal, chalk, pastels, various kinds of erasers, markers, styluses, and various metals (such as silverpoint). An artist who practices or works in drawing may be called a draftsman or draughtsman. (Robinson, 2009).Communicative drawing has tremendous benefits and impacts to societies across the African continent , both in the past and present and Africans have been creative designers’ and artistic for generations , most Egyptians drawings has been beneficial to the economy by attracting tourist across the world and making Egypt a major tourist hub across the continent and the globe at large, other African countries like Tunisia, and morocco also have benefited in drawings as well among many other African countries (Farthing et al , 2011). .
Communicative drawing can be defined as visual representation of three dimensional surface with aim of sending message to the viewer, (lyon, 2007).Drawing has been used as communities mouth piece for expression of the people ways of feeling across many societies in the globe including the east African societies, while in Uganda the drawings are in museum.
When drawing a small amount of material is released onto a surface, leaving a visible mark. The most common support for drawing is paper, although other materials, such as cardboard, plastic, leather, canvas, and board, may be used. Temporary drawings may be made on a blackboard or whiteboard or indeed almost anything. The medium has been a popular and fundamental means of public expression throughout human history. It is one of the simplest and most efficient means of communicating visual ideas. The wide availability of drawing instruments makes drawing one of the most common artistic activities. (Chamberlain et al, 2013). Drawing is the starting point that many designers use after accepting a design brief and under taking research ( tan 2004).Kyambogo University was established in 2003 by the Universities and Other Tertiary Institutions Act 2001, by merging Uganda Polytechnic Kyambogo (UPK), the Institute of Teacher Education, Kyambogo (ITEK), and the Uganda National Institute of Special Education (UNISE). communicative drawing has got numerous benefits to the society like in treating certain types of sickness, communication in the society, creation of jobs in a country, tourist attraction in a country among many other benefits, despite all the above benefits BVAD II students are faced with numerous challenges poor performance in communicative drawing, poor attitude of students towards communicative drawing, low level of funding of drawings by the government , basing on the above , the researcher intends to examine into the BVAD II students competence in production of communicative drawing at the department of art and design of kyambogo university.
