CHAPTER THREE: METHODOLOGY

3.1 Introduction

This chapter outlines the research methodology, covering the study design, setting, population, sample size determination, sampling procedure, inclusion criteria, variable definitions, research instruments, data collection and management, data analysis, ethical considerations, dissemination of results, and study limitations.

3.2 Study Design and Rationale

cross-sectional descriptive design will be employed, incorporating both quantitative and qualitative data collection methods. This approach is suitable as it facilitates efficient data gathering for the study objectives.

3.3 Study Setting and Rationale

The study will be conducted at Azur Christian Health Centre IV, one of four health center IVs in Kahoora Division, Hoima Municipality. The facility serves a population of 2,400 people seeking family planning services and is located 3 kilometers south of Hoima Municipality, bordering Masindi, Kibale, Bulisa, and Kyankwanzi districts.

Azur Christian Health Centre IV provides various services, including:

  • HAART (HIV treatment)
  • Antenatal (ANC) and postnatal care (PNC)
  • Outpatient (OPD), nutrition, and immunization services
  • Deliveries, family planning, and cervical cancer screening
  • Radiography and other medical services

The site was selected due to its accessibility and proximity to the researcher’s residence.

3.4 Study Population

The target population comprises women of childbearing age, particularly those who are HIV-positive and receiving services at Azur Health Centre IV.

3.4.1 Sample Size Determination

A sample of 30 respondents will be selected from the health center.

3.4.2 Sampling Procedure

Simple random sampling will be used. The researcher will prepare slips labeled “YES” and “NO”, shuffle them, and have respondents pick one. Those who voluntarily consent (selecting “YES”) will be included until the desired sample size (30) is achieved.

3.4.3 Inclusion Criteria

Participants must be:

  • Mothers attending services at Azur Health Centre IV
  • Available during data collection
  • Willing to provide voluntary consent

3.5 Definition of Variables

  • Independent Variables:
    • Socioeconomic factors influencing family planning among HIV-positive mothers
    • Knowledge of family planning methods among HIV-positive mothers
    • Individual-related factors affecting family planning use
  • Dependent Variable:
    • Utilization of family planning services among HIV-positive mothers

3.6 Research Instrument

Data will be collected using a structured questionnaire with closed and open-ended questions (in English). The researcher will translate the questionnaire into local languages (Runyoro, Rugungu, and Alur) to enhance comprehension and data accuracy.

3.7 Data Collection Procedure

Questionnaires will be administered in wards/departments where services are provided to ensure privacy and efficiency.

3.7.1 Data Analysis and Presentation

Data will be manually checked for completeness, then analyzed using Microsoft Excel 2010. Results will be presented in tables and figures.

3.8 Ethical Considerations

  • Approval will be obtained from Public Health Nurses College before data collection.
  • The health center administration will introduce the researcher to respondents.
  • Participants will receive clear explanations of the study and must provide informed consent.
  • Confidentiality will be maintained by using codes instead of names.

3.9 Limitations of the Study

  1. Financial constraints (internet, printing, transport costs) – addressed through strict budgeting.
  2. Time constraints (balancing research and coursework) – managed by prioritizing tasks.
  3. Participant reluctance – mitigated by conducting interviews in a private, confidential setting.

3.10 Dissemination of Results

Findings will be shared with:

  • Uganda Nurses and Midwives Examinations Board (UNMEB)
  • Kyambogo Public Health Nurses’ College
  • Hoima District Chief Administrative Officer & Azur Health Centre IV administration
  • A copy will be retained for future reference.
