EXAMINING SUPPORT SYSTEMS FOR IMPROVING THE LIVELIHOODS OF THE ELDERLY IN KIRA MUNICIPALITY
1.0 Introduction
This study focuses on examining support systems aimed at improving the livelihoods of elderly people in Kira Municipality, Wakiso District. The chapter outlines the background, problem statement, purpose, objectives, research questions, scope, significance, limitations, delimitations, and definitions of key terms.
1.1 Background of the Study
Retirement is often viewed as a phase of life dedicated to leisure and personal interests. However, it is also associated with aging, chronic health conditions, and social isolation. Many younger individuals are preoccupied with their own responsibilities and often overlook the needs of elderly relatives. Occasional communication is not sufficient to ensure their well-being. The quality of life of elderly individuals depends on various factors, and several interventions can improve it.
1.1.1 Social Support and Care
Regular interaction, even through simple conversations, helps maintain mental engagement and reduces loneliness. For elderly individuals who require assistance with daily activities such as bathing, cooking, or mobility, home-based caregivers can provide essential support.
1.1.2 Promoting a Sense of Usefulness
Elderly individuals benefit from being involved in daily activities. Allowing them to contribute, even in small ways, enhances their sense of purpose and overall happiness.
1.1.3 Mental Engagement
Keeping the elderly mentally active is essential for their well-being. Activities such as reading, puzzles, and games like Sudoku or crosswords help stimulate cognitive function and reduce focus on health-related concerns.
1.1.4 Social Participation
Encouraging participation in community or social gatherings enables elderly individuals to maintain social connections and have something to look forward to, thereby improving their quality of life.
1.1.5 Physical Activity
Regular physical activity, even in simple forms like walking, is vital for maintaining health. Assigning light tasks or encouraging activities such as walking pets can help elderly individuals remain active and feel purposeful.
These simple interventions collectively contribute to improving the overall well-being of elderly individuals.
Population Distribution in Kira Municipality
(Table retained as presented)
The elderly population constitutes an important segment of society and requires adequate social protection. In many developing countries, a large proportion of elderly individuals have not been formally employed and therefore lack pension coverage. Traditionally, extended family systems provided support, but modernization and urbanization have weakened these structures. As a result, elderly individuals are increasingly vulnerable, particularly in low-income households.
The growing demand for support systems has attracted attention from governments and development partners. However, more research is needed to identify effective and sustainable solutions.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
The increasing number of elderly individuals, particularly women, presents a significant challenge for governments and organizations. In sub-Saharan Africa, the population aged 65 and above is projected to grow substantially. Despite this trend, elderly individuals are often excluded from decision-making processes.
They are among the most economically and socially marginalized groups, highlighting the need for targeted interventions. There is an urgent need to prioritize their rights, including security and access to resources, through effective support systems that enhance their livelihoods.
1.3 Purpose of the Study
The study aims to examine support systems that can improve the livelihoods of elderly individuals in Kira Municipality, Wakiso District.
1.4 Broad Objective

CHAPTER TWO: LITERATURE REVIEW
2.0 Introduction
This chapter reviews literature on support systems for improving the livelihoods of the elderly, focusing on challenges, coping strategies, and potential interventions.
2.1 Background
The study examines demographic trends in developing countries, emphasizing the relationship between aging and poverty. It highlights policy challenges related to economic well-being and healthcare for elderly populations. The study emphasizes that elderly individuals are a diverse group with varying needs, requiring comprehensive and integrated policy responses.
2.2 Definitions, Trends, and Perspectives
Defining old age solely by chronological age is often inadequate due to cultural and social variations. Aging is a gradual process, and distinctions such as “young-old” and “old-old” are often more meaningful. However, societal perceptions frequently portray elderly individuals as dependent and vulnerable, reinforcing negative stereotypes and limiting their participation in economic development.
