CHAPTER THREE
METHODOLOGY
3.1 Introduction
This chapter presents the methodology that will be used to conduct the study. It describes the research design, data types and sources, study area and population, sample size and sampling techniques, data collection methods and instruments, data collection procedures, quality control of research instruments, data presentation and analysis, and limitations of the study.
3.2 Research Design
The study will adopt a survey research design to collect information from selected respondents concerning the benefits of ICT accounting applications on accounting processes. Both quantitative and qualitative approaches will be employed to collect and analyze the data.
The quantitative approach will be used to collect numerical data that can be statistically analyzed and presented using frequencies, percentages, and tables. The qualitative approach will be used to obtain detailed information regarding respondents’ experiences, opinions, perceptions, and practices concerning the use of ICT accounting applications in accounting processes. According to Hughes (2006), quantitative research focuses on data that can be expressed and analyzed numerically, whereas qualitative research focuses on describing events, experiences, perceptions, and other phenomena in a non-numerical manner. The use of both approaches will enable the researcher to obtain comprehensive information relevant to the objectives of the study.
3.3 Data Types and Sources
The study will use both primary and secondary data sources.
3.3.1 Primary Data
Primary data will be obtained directly from the selected respondents using questionnaires and interviews. The data will provide information on respondents’ opinions, experiences, and practices concerning the benefits of ICT accounting applications on accounting processes.
The questionnaires will primarily consist of closed-ended questions structured using a Likert scale. They will be administered to selected employees, including those working in accounting, procurement, and administrative departments, because of their potential knowledge and experience regarding ICT accounting applications and accounting processes.
3.3.2 Secondary Data
Secondary data refers to information that has previously been collected and documented by individuals, institutions, or agencies for purposes other than the specific research being conducted (Bell, 1997). In this study, secondary data will consist of existing literature and information related to ICT accounting applications and accounting processes.
Secondary data will be obtained from textbooks, newspapers, magazines, academic journals, research articles, institutional reports, internet sources, and previous studies related to the topic. Secondary sources will supplement primary data and provide theoretical and empirical information relevant to the study. They will also enable the researcher to obtain information in a relatively cost-effective and timely manner.
3.4 Study Area and Population
The study will be conducted at Britannia Allied Industries. The study population will comprise a total of 35 employees. The target population will include employees in departments such as accounting, procurement, and administration because they are considered to have relevant knowledge and experience concerning ICT accounting applications and accounting processes.
From the target population of 35 employees, a sample of 30 employees will be selected to participate in the study.
3.5 Sample Size and Sampling Technique
The study will use purposive sampling to select respondents. According to Black (2010), purposive sampling, also referred to as judgmental, selective, or subjective sampling, is a technique in which the researcher deliberately selects participants based on their knowledge, characteristics, or relevance to the study.
Purposive sampling will be used because the study population is relatively small and the researcher will require respondents who possess relevant knowledge and experience concerning ICT accounting applications and accounting processes. The technique will enable the researcher to select respondents who are considered capable of providing reliable and relevant information required to address the objectives of the study.
3.6 Data Collection Methods and Instruments
The study will employ questionnaires and interviews as the main methods of data collection. The use of more than one data collection method will enable the researcher to obtain both quantitative and qualitative information.
3.6.1 Questionnaires
Questionnaires will be used to collect quantitative data from the selected respondents. The questionnaire will be developed based on the research objectives and research questions and will focus on the benefits of ICT accounting applications on accounting processes.
The questionnaires will mainly contain closed-ended questions using a Likert scale. They will be administered to employees in relevant departments, including accounting, procurement, and administration. Respondents will complete the questionnaires independently, which will provide them with sufficient time to understand and respond to the questions.
The questionnaire method will be appropriate because it allows information to be collected from several respondents within a relatively short period. Furthermore, the anonymous nature of the questionnaire may encourage respondents to provide honest and independent responses.
3.6.2 Interview Guide
Interviews will be used to collect qualitative information from selected key informants. A structured interview guide will be prepared based on the objectives and research questions of the study.
The interviews will mainly involve selected administrative and managerial staff who have relevant knowledge of the organization’s accounting processes and use of ICT accounting applications. Each interview is expected to take approximately 30 to 60 minutes.
Interviews will be used because they provide an opportunity to obtain detailed information regarding respondents’ experiences, perceptions, opinions, and attitudes. The researcher will use both formal and probing questions where necessary to obtain comprehensive information relevant to the study.
3.7 Data Collection Procedures
The researcher will first obtain an introductory letter from the Dean, School of Management and Entrepreneurship, Kyambogo University, requesting permission to conduct the study. The introductory letter will be presented to the management of Britannia Allied Industries to seek permission to conduct the study within the organization.
After obtaining permission, the researcher will identify and make appointments with the selected respondents. The researcher will then administer the questionnaires and conduct interviews according to the agreed schedules.
The researcher will personally administer the questionnaires to the selected respondents in order to minimize delays, ensure that the questionnaires are properly completed, and clarify any questions that respondents may not understand. The researcher will also ensure that completed questionnaires are collected, checked for completeness, and handled confidentially.
Before the main data collection exercise, the questionnaire will be pilot-tested on 10 employees of Britannia Allied Industries who will not form part of the final sample where practicable. The purpose of the pilot test will be to identify ambiguous, unclear, or inappropriate questions and improve the research instrument before the actual data collection.
Feedback obtained from the pilot test will be used to revise and improve the questionnaire. After the necessary amendments have been made, the final questionnaires will be distributed to the selected respondents.
3.8 Quality Control of Research Instruments
The quality of the research instruments will be ensured by assessing their validity and reliability before the actual data collection.
3.8.1 Validity
Validity refers to the extent to which a research instrument measures what it is intended to measure. To establish the validity of the research instruments, the questionnaire will be pre-tested among selected respondents with characteristics similar to those of the target respondents.
The researcher will review the feedback obtained during the pre-testing exercise and make the necessary amendments to ensure that the questions are clear, relevant, and consistent with the study objectives and research questions. The revised instruments will then be reviewed by the researcher and supervisor before they are used for the main data collection exercise.
3.8.2 Reliability
Reliability refers to the consistency of a research instrument in producing similar results when used under similar conditions. The reliability of the questionnaire will be assessed using the test-retest method, as recommended by Amin (2005).
Under this approach, the questionnaire will be administered to a selected group of respondents on two different occasions, with an appropriate interval between the two administrations. The responses obtained from the two administrations will then be compared to determine the consistency of the instrument.
After the questionnaires have been collected, they will be manually edited to identify incomplete or inconsistent responses. The data will then be coded and entered into a computer for analysis. Frequency counts and percentages will subsequently be generated for the relevant variables.
3.9 Data Presentation and Analysis
The collected raw data will be processed and transformed into meaningful information. Data processing will involve editing, coding, tabulation, and analysis. These procedures will help ensure the completeness, accuracy, and consistency of the collected information.
3.9.1 Editing
Editing will involve examining the completed questionnaires to identify errors, omissions, inconsistencies, and incomplete responses. The researcher will ensure that only relevant and adequately completed information is included in the final analysis.
3.9.2 Tabulation
The processed data will be presented in tables to facilitate interpretation and comparison. Tables will be used to present frequencies and percentages and to identify patterns and relationships among the variables under investigation.
3.9.3 Data Analysis
Quantitative data will be analyzed using Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS) and Microsoft Excel. Descriptive statistics, including frequencies and percentages, will be used to summarize and present the findings.
Qualitative data obtained through interviews will be analyzed thematically. The researcher will organize the responses according to major themes and patterns emerging from the data. The findings will then be interpreted in relation to the research objectives and existing literature.
The analysis will enable the researcher to establish the benefits of ICT accounting applications on accounting processes and draw appropriate conclusions and recommendations based on the findings.
3.10 Limitations of the Study
The study may encounter several limitations, including the following:
3.10.1 Non-response
The researcher may experience non-response from some respondents who may be unwilling or unable to complete the questionnaires. This may affect the amount of data collected. To minimize this challenge, the researcher will explain the purpose of the study to respondents and assure them that the information provided will be treated with strict confidentiality and used only for academic purposes.
3.10.2 Financial Constraints
The researcher may experience financial limitations during the study. Major expenses may include transportation, printing, photocopying, communication, and other research-related costs. To address this challenge, the researcher will prepare a realistic budget, prioritize essential research activities, and use available resources efficiently.
3.10.3 Time Constraints
The researcher may face time limitations during data collection, data analysis, and preparation of the final research report. To overcome this challenge, the researcher will develop a clear research schedule and adhere to agreed appointments with respondents. Proper planning and timely completion of each stage of the research process will help minimize the effects of time constraints.
