RESEARCH PROPOSAL ON DIABETES

1. Title

Prevalence, Risk Factors, and Management of Type 2 Diabetes in Urban and Rural Communities

2. Introduction

Diabetes is a chronic metabolic disorder characterized by elevated blood glucose levels due to the body’s inability to produce or effectively use insulin. It has become a major global public health concern, particularly Type 2 Diabetes, which accounts for the majority of diabetes cases worldwide.

In developing countries, including Uganda, the burden of diabetes is rapidly increasing due to urbanization, lifestyle changes, poor dietary habits, and reduced physical activity. Despite this growing trend, awareness, early diagnosis, and proper management remain inadequate, especially in rural areas.

3. Problem Statement

The prevalence of Type 2 Diabetes is rising steadily, yet many individuals remain undiagnosed or poorly managed. Limited access to healthcare services, lack of awareness, and insufficient preventive strategies contribute to increased complications such as cardiovascular diseases, kidney failure, and vision loss. There is a need to better understand the risk factors, prevalence, and management practices of diabetes to inform effective interventions.

4. Objectives

4.1 General Objective

To assess the prevalence, risk factors, and management of Type 2 Diabetes in urban and rural communities.

4.2 Specific Objectives

  1. To determine the prevalence of diabetes among selected populations.
  2. To identify key risk factors associated with diabetes.
  3. To evaluate current management and treatment practices.
  4. To assess awareness levels regarding diabetes prevention and control.

5. Research Questions

  1. What is the prevalence of diabetes in urban and rural communities?
  2. What are the major risk factors contributing to diabetes?
  3. How is diabetes currently managed among affected individuals?
  4. What is the level of awareness regarding diabetes prevention?

6. Literature Review

Studies show that Type 2 Diabetes is strongly associated with risk factors such as obesity, physical inactivity, unhealthy diets, and genetic predisposition. Urban populations tend to have higher prevalence rates due to sedentary lifestyles and increased consumption of processed foods.

Research also indicates that early diagnosis and lifestyle modifications—such as regular exercise, healthy eating, and medication adherence—are critical in managing diabetes. However, barriers such as poverty, limited healthcare access, and cultural beliefs hinder effective management in many developing countries.

7. Methodology

7.1 Research Design

A cross-sectional study design will be used, combining quantitative and qualitative approaches.

7.2 Study Area

The study will be conducted in selected urban and rural areas in Uganda.

7.3 Target Population

Adults aged 18 years and above.

7.4 Sampling Technique

  • Stratified sampling to ensure representation of urban and rural populations
  • Random sampling to select participants

7.5 Data Collection Methods

  • Structured questionnaires
  • Medical screenings (blood glucose tests)
  • Interviews with healthcare providers

7.6 Data Analysis

  • Quantitative data: Statistical analysis using software such as SPSS
  • Qualitative data: Thematic analysis

8. Expected Outcomes

  • Reliable data on the prevalence of diabetes
  • Identification of key risk factors
  • Insights into management practices and challenges
  • Recommendations for improving diabetes prevention and care

9. Significance of the Study

The study will contribute to improved public health strategies by providing evidence-based recommendations for diabetes prevention and management. It will also support policymakers and healthcare providers in designing targeted interventions to reduce the burden of diabetes.

10. Limitations of the Study

  • Limited financial resources
  • Possible reluctance of participants to undergo medical testing
  • Time constraints
